Wretchard channels al-Qaeda in "Memo to Osama". Go read this post now. It may be the most important thing you read in a long time.

Quote of the Day
"Anyone who thinks UN peacekeepers can protect Kurds against armed fundamentalist militias should do a Google search with the terms 'Rwanda, 1994' or 'Srebrenica, 1995'."

VDH in TNR
Victor Davis Hanson makes a guest appearance in The New Republic this week, with a to-the-point prescription for success in this war.
Also, Leon Wieseltier (one of my favorite writers) asks some tough questions about dead children.
Run out and get the print issue if you possibly can.

Shako Mako
... is colloquial Iraqi Arabic for "What's happening?" (It literally means "What's there? What's not there?" like the Turkish expression "ne var, ne yok?") Shako Mako is also the name of a very good new blog devoted to discussion of the Iraqi blogs. Go check it out.
Great work, Jeffrey.

Good News from Dallas
Fayrouz has been invited to write an article on the Iraqi bloggers for the Dallas Morning News.
The Best and the Brightest
Zeyad posts an article from the Los Angeles Times warning of the threat to Iraq's medical corps from the kidnapping of top doctors. Apparently it's an increasingly serious problem.
Mohammed on Sheikh al-Yawer
Mohammed at Iraq the Model writes favorably on the new Iraqi President. While Pachachi would have been Mohammed's (and many Iraqis') first choice, Mohammed says al-Yawer is relatively free of ethnic and religious partisanship, enjoys strong support, and is "a modernized man with a high scientific degree".
The new Iraqi cabinet also includes five women ministers.

Let's Blogroll!
Jane asks, "Where is the shouting, the grumbling, the Al Gore outburst against the Sudan? Where’s the intellectual-academic-media contingent’s bluster regarding the world’s worst "humanitarian disaster"? Where are the vocal protest marches and Rush Limbaugh’s invective?" Go read her post, and do something.
Ginmar just had her hopes dashed: after initially being told she was getting transferred to a better post, she finds out she's actually going someplace even more remote, isolated, and dangerous than where she is now. Drop by and give her some encouragement.
Michele at ASV is getting settled in, power tools in hand. (Helen Reddy, anyone?) She's now no longer across the street from Mom and Dad, having said goodbye to that house of 14 years. The new place is only a few blocks away but it's a whole new frontier. Best of luck, Michele.
The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler pays tribute to fellow bloggers.
Black people are cool and have rhythm; Jews are brilliant and good with money; Japanese are brilliant and good with computers; and gay men are flamboyant and fabulous. Right? Tell it to Johann Hari.
Andrew Sullivan recuperates.
Little Green Footballs asks, What's wrong with this picture?
Finally, I'm welcoming Edward Yee to my browser blogroll; I'll get you on my sidebar momentarily, Edward.

Bridge and Roses
An autopsy showed that 2-year-old "An autopsy found Ryshawn Bynum died of a brain injury and had a broken neck, broken ribs and as many as 70 whip marks on his legs, buttocks, back and chest that were of various ages." The father, Isaac Cortez Bynum, is charged in the case. Bynum's lawyer, Randall Vogt, is offering the untested defense of "post-traumatic slave syndrome", a legal theory which cites "multigenerational trauma" as a contributing factor to violent or self-destructive behavior among African Americans. The theory is the brainchild of Joy DeGruy-Leary, an assistant professor in the Portland State University Graduate School of Social Work, and is not generally accepted among the mental health community.
Should the slave theory fail to sway the judge, Vogt also appeals to the defendant's "traditional, Southern, small-town, working-class upbringing where 'whuppin' was accepted".
When white guilt fails, use class condescension.

Light posting next 2 weeks
while I take care of personal stuff and upgrade.
Currently I am using AOL dial-up and Windows ME on a four-year-old laptop that didn't work well even when it was new, and now barely functions. Needless to say, using the internet is simply painful.
Fortunately a favorable change in circumstances will allow me to upgrade to a brand-new Mac, and get broadband from a more reliable IP while I'm at it. I expect the whole process to be complete by about June 15, after which I'll be able to get a lot more done, faster, with less headache and heartbreak. Until then I will be posting occasionally; Morning Report will be on light duty.
