- New Iraqi government replaces GC, violence flares. (various) In its last act before dissolving, the Iraqi Governing Council named Iyad Allawi as Prime Minister and Sunni tribal leader Ghazi al-Yawer as President. At least 46 people were killed in terrorist attacks in Iraq preceding the ceremony, including an attack on the Kurdish party offices. Adnan Pachachi, considered Washington’s favorite for the presidency, stated he would not accept the office.
